Hailing from County Donegal and taking influence from the likes of Leadbelly and John Lee Hooker, Rory Gallagher was one of the biggest talents in blues. Beginning his music journey with the trio Taste before going solo, Gallagher built up a reputation for mammoth live shows, charismatic vocals and scintillating guitar riffs and solos. 'The Essential Rory Gallagher' includes the classics 'Follow Me' and 'Million Miles Away'. At last a collection that begins to do justice to the great man's music. Since Rory's too early passing he's often been poorly served by the posthumous releases, even 'Big Guns' was a bit disappointing to those of us expecting it to be the one that finally brought it all together. This release does a much better job and is nicely compiled, with some great photos and touching liner notes. It's definitely the one to buy if you are new to Rory's music or just want a nice compilation of great tracks. That said, there is still so much missing that we now patiently await the definitive box set spanning his days with Taste to his last recordings. It's what all his long term fans are hoping for and we want to see it on our shelves at home where he belongs before we're all too old.
